TIPS ON ADMINISTERING TESTS
Because Math-U-See is mastery-based, our courses don’t always correspond with traditional “grade levels,” especially the elementary courses. The Placement Tests were designed to determine what level of mathematics the student has already mastered. Watch your student complete the Placement Test to see how confident they are about their math knowledge. For instance, if a student gets the correct answer to an addition problem, but counts on their fingers to find the answer, then the student needs to cover this material again.
If they confidently complete the Placement Test for one level, move them to the next level’s Placement Test. If they aren’t functioning at an acceptable level—if they aren’t easily and confidently able to complete the problems for a level—then place the student in the respective book where they are struggling. Another example: if a student has difficulty with the division problems on the Delta Placement Test, they should begin in the Delta level, since Delta presents division concepts. However, if they pass the Delta Placement Test confidently, give them the test for the next level, which would be Epsilon…and so on, until you reach a level where they begin to struggle with the concepts. At this point, you might like to contact Customer Service to confirm your results and your student’s starting placement.
