The Placement Tests help determine the best level for a student to begin within the Math-U-See curriculum.
While the student is taking the Placement Test, the teacher should document observations regarding whether the student is using finger counting, touch points, or tally marks; other patterns should be noted such as missing steps, careless errors, or incorrect methods. These observations should be recorded on the Class Placement Data Sheet* or in a similar fashion.
If you know your student can: count to ten verbally; recognize the numbers 0 to 10; and is ready for formalized instruction, then we recommend administering the Alpha Placement test first. If, while taking that test, the student demonstrates mastery ofAlpha content and the prerequisite skills for Beta, then the student can progress through the tests until the appropriate entry level is found.
If your student is struggling with basic number recognition, we recommend starting with Primer. Note: Due to the pacing of thePrimer level, it is not recommended for students with severe cognitive issues. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation so we can help you to determine if Primer would be appropriate in your educational setting.
